Keijo, my man

A project I started about a year ago. The first goal was to study how to use MotionBuilder for animation. So, I started modelling a high-poly model of my character. I also created the basic bone system what MotionBuilder requires, also made some basic morph targets for the head. The goal was to get this dude walking in real time in our motion capture system, and it did work just great! Later on I made more morphs (all necessary alphabets, more emotional and angry morphs). Textures are mostly by me but Arto made some really astonishing skin texture!

There's a short story about this dude. First it was supposed to be part of our group's animation experiment but later on I started to wrap a story around my character. This old and angry looking man, Keijo, lives alone in some distant place in Finland. He has a small cottage, a precious moped and some farm tools and machines. I have few good stories about this guy and what he does but unfortunately don't have the time to pursue the project right now.

Dear Moped

Here's Keijo's moped. I modelled the original and well known Finnish "PappaTunturi" moped. As well as Keijo also the moped looks very traditional. The moped looks quite big compared to Keijo and it does not come from the same worls, something must be done...

To be able to use this model in my animation I made a low poly model, rigged it and imported it in MotionBuilder. Now I could use the character and low poly moped in MotionBuilder to create the animation. Later I could take the animation in 3D Studio Max and replace the low poly moped with the high poly one. Simple.

This "Hans" was one of the main characters in the animation. I modelled him according to our artists' drawings and rigged it as our animators wished...of course
